How to Teach Your Dog to Spin
I’ve always wanted to teach Luna to spin, but just never got around to it. She’s nailed roll over and play dead, so I just knew she’d be able to figure out spin as well. Plus, it’s not too complicated to teach and she’s extremely food motivated (hello… BEAGLE).
We have a fun video that shows Luna going through the training process and learning to spin. Go ahead and give that a watch first (it’s only 26 seconds). Then, you can recap with the steps below!
So How Did We Do It?
1. First, I had Luna sit. She was pretty good at that already!
2. Then I would repeat the word “Spin” along with drawing a horizontal circle with my figure. Hand signals along with verbal commands are super important for us! She was super confused at first, but I wanted to get her used to hearing and seeing the cues.
3. Next I paired the those cues with a tasty treat. We always train with Positive Reinforcement. Training should be a fun (and tasty) experience.
4. Starting from Luna in a siting position, I would draw the treat around her in a circle from front to back. The attraction of the treat would get her to turn around. She got a treat and lots of praise each time!
5. Once she mastered turning around to face backwards, we started going all the way around in a circle until she ended up right back where she started. Again she got her tasty treat and all the positive praise.
6. After what seemed like several hundred tries, she finally got it. Then we started reducing the number of treats while still keeping all the positive love, so that way she could do the trick without a treat each and every time.
7. End with a “Sit”, so that way your pup can spin again and again. Plus, you get to end on something they know well making the experience super positive all the way through until the end.
Right now we’re still working on the final step, but she’s done so well and I’m so proud of my little pup. I bet your dog can even do it too! Let us know in the comments how it goes when you give this new trick a try.
