Growing up right next to Washington, DC, I wish I could say that I’ve seen all the sights. I haven’t. Sometimes I forget that it is okay to play tourist every once in a while, even in your hometown. This weekend I headed into DC to see the Martin Luther King Memorial and the World War II Memorial, but then I quickly remembered why I don’t make it downtown too often.
As I was laying in my air conditioned apartment after a busy and sweaty day, I watched a few episodes of Parks and Rec on Netflix, including the one where Leslie visits DC. At one point, Amy Poehler’s character nailed what it is like to spend the summer in DC.
“I saw twenty-four historical sites in a day and it’s a hundred and twenty degrees out with two hundred percent humidity because this is a stupid swamp town.”
So while summer isn’t technically here until later this week on June 21, it already feels like it is here. And so we are celebrating like it is here.
