There is almost nothing that screams the holidays more to me than family road trips. Ever since I was a little kid my family would load into the mini van and drive from Florida or Virginia all the way to Missouri at either Thanksgiving or Christmas time almost every year.
And we almost always had at least one pet with us. Although, a few times we had at least one dog and two cats along for the holiday road trip. They would ride in the back with us kids and all the presents, either sitting on a seat or in between me and my sister’s two bucket seats.
Growing up I didn’t think too much about what would happen if we got into an accident. I didn’t think about my safety or the safety of my pets. I was just blissfully happy at playing the license plate game or annoying my little sister as much as I could.
It wasn’t until I adopted my own dog that the safety of pets while riding in cars even occurred to me. It didn’t take long until I was searching for different ways to keep Luna safe while we were on the go. One brand I stumbled across was Sleepypod and we’ve been using their car harnesses ever since. Currently Sleepypod has two different car harnesses available – the Clickit Sport and Clickit Utility. You can see our comparison of the two different harnesses in a post here. In the end, I liked the Clickit Sport a bit more for the ease of use and we’ve been using ours with Luna for over a year now.
It is about time that Ralph got a harness of his own. We picked out the Orange Dream Clickit Sport in size Small for Ralph and it fits him like a glove. Just look how suave he looks in that orange!
The Clickit Sport also comes in Jet Black, Robin Egg Blue, and Strawberry Red and is available in four sizes from Small to Extra Large to accommodate dogs of all sizes. However, if your dog is much smaller than 20 lbs you might want to consider one of Sleepypod’s carriers instead.
You secure your dog in the car with the Clickit Sport by passing your existing car seat belt through the the two straps on the sides of the harness. It’s pretty easy and quick to set up and release, so you’ll be on your way in no time.
Because the Clickit Sport does utilize your car’s seat belt, it does limit your dogs range of motion. They can sit, stand, and lay down as normal, but will only be able to move a bit in each direction. This is good if your dog tends to wander around the car or pace from anxiety. However, it will not allow them to circle before laying down.
The limit of movement is a bit of a trade off on keeping your pet safe in case of an accident. To some that may seem less than ideal, but keep in mind a seat belt is how you keep yourself safe in the car too!
The harness will prevent your dog from getting loose in the event of an accident since they are tethered to the seat, but it will also help protect them from any impact. It’s even been crash tested with specially designed crash test dogs – Max and Duke.
