If you have ever been to Northern Virginia during the winter, then you are probably aware that we don’t really know how to handle snow. We get it often enough that it’s a problem, but not too often that we’re actually prepared for big snow falls.
Our inability to prepare and deal with winter weather usually means endless traffic jams on some of our favorite roads – like I-66. Last year it took me almost an hour to go 3 miles because we had a surprise “dusting.”
It also means that we salt EVERYTHING. Sidewalks and other walkways are covered in salt or ice melt pretty much from the first snow fall until it all gets washed away in mid-March. Some places think about our pets and use a pet friendly option, but there is really no way of telling once it’s already on the ground.
So we hedge our bets by protecting both Ralph and Luna’s paw pads through a few different steps. We use paw covers like Pawz on long walks and always make sure to wipe each and every paw free of possible chemicals as soon as we get back inside. We also use paw moisturizing cream to make sure they don’t get cracked and damaged.

To use Paw Rescue, all you have to do is rub it into your dog’s paw pads and massage gently.

But, I think the Pura-Tips that come as part of this system are about to change that. They are carefully designed to remove oil and dirt without damaging your dog’s inner ear and ear canal. Essentially these are fancy Q-tips for dogs and so far they have made life a lot easier. But, the best part is that they are reusable and all you have to do is rinse the tips with hot water between uses. The tips themselves are made of bio-based foams that are derived from renewable resources such as plants and trees and are produced in an eco-friendly manufacturing process.
