I love treating my dogs to special meals, but finding the time to cook for them from scratch is difficult. Hey, I can’t even always do it for myself! That’s why I’m always looking for fun and creative ways to spoil them with a delicious meal while not spending hours in the kitchen.

Our friends at Caru recently launched a new line of stews that help make this dream a reality. Daily Dish Stews are a highly nourishing, human-grade, and limited ingredient stew for dogs at an affordable everyday value price. Each one is prepared in a small batch that is slow cooked at low temperatures. They even come in TetraPaks, which you can read more about here.
Currently you can get Daily Dish Stews in four recipes – Chicken, Chicken & Beef, Beef, and Turkey & Lamb. Two of these are perfect for the base of our Shepherd’s Pie recipe!
Fun Fact: If you use the Beef Caru Daily Dish Stew, you are actually making a Cottage Pie. Shepherd’s Pie generally features lamb, which is why the Turkey & Lamb recipe is perfect! Your dog will love both and in fact any of their recipes will make a tasty treat.
This recipe is perfect for any special occasion that you want to share with your dog! I bet they would just gobble it up at Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, their birthday, or any other time you just want to party. It was an absolute huge hit with Ralph, Luna, and Cousin Keto. All three dogs LOVED it! They couldn’t wait to devour their entire pie. Cousin Keto couldn’t get enough.
Easy Shepherd’s Pie Recipe for Dogs
Ingredients:
2 Russet Potatoes
2 Boxes of Caru Daily Dish Stews (Beef or Turkey & Lamb)
1/2 Cup Carrots (Chopped)
1/2 Cup Frozen Peas
2 Eggs
1/4 Cup + 1 TBSP Milk
Steps:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Peel and cut potatoes into quarters.
Place potatoes into a large saucepan. Add enough water to cover potatoes completely.
Bring to a boil. Cover and reduce heat to medium-low. Boil for 15-20 minutes (or until the potatoes easily break apart with a fork.)
While potatoes are boiling:
Chop carrots into bite sized pieces.
Rinse peas under cool water to help thaw.
Pour Caru Daily Dish Stew into 3 ceramic bowls (one larger casserole dish will also work).
Mix in peas and carrots, dividing them evenly between the bowls.
Once potatoes are done cooking:
Drain water. It’s okay to leave a little water for moisture as you’ll be adding less milk that mashed potatoes for “humans”.
Mash the potatoes with masher, fork, or immersion blender until they reach the desired consistency.
Add milk to make mixture smooth and creamy.
Crack eggs into a bowl, add milk, and scramble.
Add to egg mixture to the potatoes and mix together.
Divide the potato mixture over top of the three bowls of the Caru Daily Dish Stew mixture.
Bake for 15-20 minutes at 400 degrees F until the potatoes are lightly browned on top. To further brown the potatoes (without heating the casserole too much – the Caru Daily Dish Stew is already cooked!), broil for 5 minutes.
Let cool 10-15 minutes and then serve to your hungry pups!

Additional Tips and Tricks
TIP: Refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days.
TIP: If you want to make one larger casserole, you may need to bake a little longer to heat through. Don’t worry everything is safe to eat without baking!
Tight on time? Quicker alternative: Skip adding the egg to the potatoes and baking it altogether. It might not look as fancy, but your dog will still love it. We did this for Cousin Keto’s meal because he was too hungry to wait. He kept barking until his belly was full.
Feeling extra lazy? Just serve a Caru Daily Dish Stew as is! Learn more about Caru and Daily Dish Stews on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Don’t forget to be creative with the add-ons! Some other options include:
Celery
Green Beans
Fennel
Herbs & Spices (Parsley, Rosemary, Thyme, Turmeric, Ginger, Dill)
Ralph gives this recipe all four paws up. It was so good, he made sure to lick every single bit out of the bowl – even using his paw to ensure it didn’t run away until he was finished.
