Summer is definitely in full swing here in Colorado. With days in the high 90s, I’m constantly looking for ways to keep my dogs cool and hydrated. I’ve become a massive fan of creating fruit based pupsicles for them to enjoy during warmer weather. I’ve found that it’s a great way to entice both my dogs to intake a little extra water and they absolutely LOVE the fruit flavors.

In honor of the Fourth of July (which is also my birthday), I wanted to give my pups something to celebrate with too! Naturally making a red, white, and blue frozen dog treat was the answer. Strawberries and blueberries are some of our favorite fruits, so those were of course our top choice to be included in this festive treat. As for the “white”? I went with coconut!

Making individual frozen treats is a wonderful option especially if you have super cute molds or ice cube trays, but lately I’ve been loving using the Yummy Travel Bowls from Sleepypod because they can be resealed and saved for later. Of course the bowls can be put in the freezer and are dishwasher safe. I think the Yummy Travel Bowls allow pets to enjoy a refreshing drink (or snack) throughout an event or the day.

Recipe – Patriotic Frozen Dog Treats

Did you know that strawberries, blueberries, and coconut all have some health benefits for dogs? Blueberries are known as “superfoods” and that goes for your pups too! They are full of antioxidants and fiber.

Strawberries are also super healthy for dogs. They are high in fiber and vitamin C. Just like blueberries, they are full of antioxidants. And fun fact: they contain an enzyme that could even help whiten your dog’s teeth!

The one catch with fruit is their sugar content. You want to watch just how much you give your dog. Too much is too much, so don’t overdue it!

Coconut is another one of those magical “superfoods” for both dogs and humans. It’s also full of fiber, which helps support digestion.

So go on and make your dog a special treat for July 4th! I just know they will love it. And even though this treat is red, white, and blue, you can certainly make it all year round!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure you use no sugar added coconut. Another great option is coconut chips. You can get ones made especially for dogs from Dr. Harvey’s called Coconut Smiles.

If your dog doesn’t like the treat frozen, it will gradually melt overtime keeping it cold for hours. That’s absolutely perfect for a hot summer day, if you ask me!
