July is Pet Hydration Month. It was first started by PetSafe in order to help spread awareness about why it is so important to keep pets hydrated and how to do it. This year we are joining in and it is perfect timing because are right in the middle of the hot, hot summer.

Did you know?

A human’s body is made up of about 55-60%, but a pet’s is 80% water!

Dogs and cats need about 1 oz of water for every 1 lb of body weight each day!

Luna prepares to drink from our Drinkwell Avalon Fountain from PetSafe

Getting Luna to drink enough water has always been a bit of a challenge because she doesn’t always drink enough on her own. Over the course of our past 2.5 years together I’ve learned a few tricks to entice her to drink a bit more water and keep hydrated.

How to Keep Your Pets Hydrated

  • Mix a bit of water with their meals to make a broth. This works with pretty much an type of food that your dog may be eating including kibble, home cooked, and dehydrated. If your pup is anything like Luna, then will likely lick it right up.
  • Whip up a batch of delicious frozen treats like our Strawberry Pupsicles. Your dog will love them and the extra moisture will help keep them hydrated.
  • Try making a flavored broth without their food to encourage drinking throughout the day. Luna will slurp up any meaty flavored liquid!
  • Bring water with you when you are on the go. Get a reliable bowl for car travel and bring along a water bottle with a pop up bowl for hikes, picnics, dog park trips, or any other pet friendly activity.
  • Always have fresh, clean water available in your home. If you have a larger home, consider having more than one water source available for your pets. Make sure that no matter where they are in your home, they have access to the water and don’t forget about the deck or patio!

The Drinkwell Avalon Fountain from PetSafe

It can be a challenge to make sure your pet’s water is clean and fresh in a typical bowl. There is nothing to filter out any bits of dirt, dust, or pet hair that fall in the stagnant water. Fortunately, PetSafe thought this through and offers a wide variety of self filtering water fountains for dogs and cats!

For the past month, we have been trying out PetSafe’s Drinkwell Avalon Fountain and I absolutely love it. Luna was a little hesitant to use the the fountain at first because of the sound of the flowing water, but now she uses it all the time.

What I Love About the Drinkwell Fountain

  • The fountain holds way more water than a standard bowl does (70 oz). It is less likely that your pets will run out of water before you remember to refill it. The fountain also makes it easier to see when you need to add a bit more water.
  • It is also so much easier to tell how much water your pet has consumed by watching the water line. Since you don’t need to constantly refill, you can tell at a quick glance, your pet has been consuming enough water.
The water is always clean and filtered. It is never stagnant sitting in the bowl, so any particles that may fall in are filtered out quickly.
  • The Drinkwell Avalon Fountain is super stylish and goes perfectly with my red themed kitchen. I’m also loving the Drinkwell Pagoda and Sedona Fountains!
  • The fountain also gives off a relaxing water sound. Definitely an awesome bonus!

Luna enjoys fresh water from the Drinkwell Avalon Fountain.

In addition to the Drinkwell Avalon, PetSafe offers a whole bunch of other fountains ranging in different sizes and styles. There are even a few that are designed to go outside and are perfect for the summer! Larger fountains are great for multi-pet families too!

Since the fountains are filtering the water, you will have to replace the filters about every 2-4 weeks depending on use. Each fountain requires a specific size filter, so be sure you are picking out the right one when you pick up filter replacements!

The fountains may also cause a bit of a watery mess, but it’s not really any bigger than one from a typical water bowl. I definitely recommend keeping them on top of a mat or on waterproof flooring to avoid damage and slipping.

We’ll also be trying the Drinkwell Outdoor Dog Fountain, so stay tuned for how we like it!

Luna can't wait for clean, fresh water from our PetSafe Fountain.
