I’m a bit obsessed with being prepared. Not to the point where I have years worth of canned food in a closet, but I want to make sure my entire family is safe when we travel and go on adventures. Knowing that I have a first aid kit with me in my backpack or in the car definitely makes me feel more stress free when experiencing something new.
You can always assemble your own first aid kit if you have found a great portable bag. Make sure you check the list below to ensure you’ve included all the essential items in the kit. If DIY isn’t for you, we also have a great option or starting point for a personalized kit.

Must Have Items in a Dog’s First Aid Kit
When shopping for or putting together a portable first aid kit for your dog and yourself, be sure to include these must have items. You may need to add to the list depending on your own situation. Be sure to include any regular shelf stable medications as well.

Gauze Dressing Rolls
Wound Pads or Squares
Tongue Depressors (Splint)
Eye Wash or Saline Solution
Disposable Gloves
Dull Ended Scissors
Rubbing Alcohol or Alcohol Pads (Cleaning)
Emergency Blanket
First Aid Tape
Cotton Swabs
Hand Sanitizer
Hydrogen Peroxide (NOT for cats!)
Instant Cold Packs
Styptic Pencil (Stop Bleeding)
Antiseptic Spray or Wipes
Tweezers or Tick Remover
Eyedropper or Needless Syringe
If it sounds like a lot of work to gather all these things and pack them into a super portable bag, then don’t fret! The First Aid Kit from Alcott is a great place to start. This kit features 46 items including everything above and more.
