There are so many dog treat and food brands available on the market today that sometimes it is hard to separate the good from the bad. When I first adopted Luna, I was overwhelmed by all of the options and sought recommendations from her rescue group on what to use. The advice I received was…

Buy the best you can afford.

These are words that I live by both in terms of buying for Luna and myself. With just a bit of research you can find great products at any price point and I believe that is a core aspect of bargain hunting.

In terms of dog food, Merrick Pet Care produces a budget friendly, but yet quality kibble in Whole Earth Farms. The price point and quality make Whole Earth Farms a great fit for my budget and is what I feed Luna for most of her meals.

Since Whole Earth Farms is what Luna eats, I was thrilled to learn that four new dry dog food recipes were being added while at the Global Pet Expo in March. The four new recipes are Grain Free Recipe with Salmon & Whitefish, Grain Free Recipe with Duck & Turkey, Grain Free Recipe Small Breeds, and Grain Free Recipe Healthy Weight.

Previously Merrick Whole Earth Farms consisted of four other recipes including the Puppy Recipe, Adult Recipe, Grain Free Recipe with Pork, Beef & Lamb, and Grain Free Recipe with Chicken & Turkey.

Luna with Merrick Whole Earth Farms Dry Dog Food

In addition to the dry dog food recipes, Merrick Whole Earth Farms also has a line of ten different wet dog food recipes available in 12.7 oz cans.

Overall Whole Earth Farms is an affordable made in the USA kibble option for dogs. You won’t find any ingredients sourced from China, but you will find protein listed as the first ingredient and multiple grain free options. The only downside of Whole Earth Farms is that the recipes are not single protein, which may be an issue if your dog is sensitive to certain proteins.

The base recipe is the same across all Whole Earth Farms dry dog food recipes, so it makes a rotation diet easy without a long transition period.

What is a Rotation Diet?

A Rotation Diet or Rotation Feeding is introducing variety to your dog’s food and meals. This type of diet involves varying proteins and even food forms and is believed by some veterinary nutritionists to provide certain benefits to your dog. The rotation schedule is based on some time period lasting anywhere from one day to one week to finishing a bag of food.

What are the Benefits of a Rotation Diet?

  1. No dog food is perfect and flaws tend to be maximized after feeding the same food for an extended period of time.
  2. Similarly, rotating your dog’s food will allow them to enjoy nutritional benefits from more than one type of food.
  3. Dogs can develop an intolerance to an ingredient or protein if they are fed the same recipe for a long period of time.
  4. Switching between food forms (dry vs. wet) can help introduce necessary fluids to your dog’s diet and keep them hydrated.
  5. Dogs need some food excitement too! A tasty new food may bring them this mealtime excitement.

A rotation diet definitely isn’t recommended for every dog, but if you are interested in trying it out ask your veterinarian for their advice.

Whole Earth Farms is available at Petco stores and other local pet supply stores.

Merrick Whole Earth Farms Dry Dog Food - New Recipes

At the Global Pet Expo, Merrick also launched a new product called Backcountry, which is a grain free kibble with freeze dried raw protein pieces. The price point of Backcountry is a bit higher than Whole Earth Farms, but it does give you the chance to get your feet wet with the idea of a raw diet. Backcountry will be available starting this spring.
