Yesterday we celebrated Luna’s second birthday. Luna is a rescue dog, so I do not really know when she was born, but every dog deserves a birthday.

Thanks to a little guidance from my friends at HART, we were able to guess that Luna was born sometime around March 2011. Her birthday was chosen to be yesterday because it is the best day in March. Who wouldn’t want their birthday on 3/21? Luna shares her birthday with my good friend, Becca of Rosey Rebecca and the fine musical composer Johann Sebastian Bach.

Although this is technically her second birthday, it is extra special because it is the first one we are celebrating together. I may have even splurged a little and bought her a few too many treats and toys. Do not worry she did not get to eat them all in one sitting and I even found a deal or two. Check out all Luna’s birthday surprises below and find out how I managed to afford it all.

Always check the clearance and sale section in your local pet stores. You just never know what you will find. I picked up the Nylabone Dura Chew, Rooper, and the Kyjen Bunjee for only a few dollars each from my local Petco!

My friend Carma Poodale recommended toys from West Paw Design because Luna manages to destroy pretty much everything else I’ve given her. I bought both the Hurley and the Tux, but I bought them from Amazon Warehouse Deals. The Tux retails at $16.50, but I paid $12.90 and the Large Hurley retails for $15.00, but I paid $11.01. Combined with Amazon’s free shipping, I was able to save a few dollars pretty easily. One thing to be aware about with Amazon Warehouse is that the items are considered “used”. While they are not actually used, they might have slight defects. You will be able to see these listed on the posting before you add a Warehouse item to your cart, but you might want to avoid Warehouse deals if you are giving them as gifts. The West Paw toys were both repackaged and the Hurley had a few scuff marks on it, but I knew Luna wouldn’t mind.

I also love supporting local businesses. Sometimes this is a little more expensive than buying from a big box store, but the products are often better and you are directly giving back to your community. I picked up a few special treats for Luna from the Super Pet Expo. We stopped by Kajo Pets and picked up some cookies and elk jerky. We also visited the booth of YaYa’s Yum Yums and Luna got a chocolateless brownie! She really enjoyed it. There will be more about these great dog treat sources in my second Super Pet Expo post.
