One of Luna’s absolute favorite things in the world is a delicious chew, so I thought there couldn’t be a better way to celebrate her birthday than through some of her favorite chews. I was thrilled when one of our go to brands, Barkworthies, agreed to sponsor today’s giveaway with five of Luna’s favorite chews in honor of her 5th birthday!

I was even more thrilled to learn that Barkworthies recently launched a two month campaign called Chews Rescue where they are encouraging pet parents to share photos and stories of their rescue dogs on Facebook. For each entry on Facebook from March 1, 2016 to April 30, 2016, Barkworthies is donating $5 to the Richmond Animal League on top of the already substantial $10,000 donation they have pledged.

Barkworthies Chews Rescue

I thought this was an absolutely amazing idea from Barkworthies. Not only are they giving a HUGE donation to animal rescue (and some delicious treats of course), but they are getting pet parents to share the love they have experienced from their rescue dogs. That’s such a great and effective way to encourage animal rescue!

Luna’s Rescue Story

Since we are talking rescue stories, I thought it might be a good idea to share Luna’s. I wish it was super exciting, but it isn’t. Though it WAS love at first sight.

I went to an adoption event hosted by a local rescue (Homeless Animal Rescue Team – HART) at a nearby Petco. I was thinking about adopting a dog and had emailed one of their volunteers about a dog I saw online. When I got to the event, I walked around with my boyfriend and met a few different dogs. Then I saw her. This bouncy beagle mix that kept trying to eat the entire bag of treats her handler was holding.

We went over to meet her and of course offered her a few treats. She was happy to see us, but also just as happy to go sniff somewhere by herself. The balance of independence, playfulness, and snuggliness seemed like the perfect combination for us.

But I wasn’t there to adopt a dog. At least not yet. I just wanted to see how the process would work for when I was ready. So I went home and tried to forget about the bouncy dog I met.

Well you probably already figured it out, but I couldn’t forget her. The day I met her was her first day with the rescue, so she didn’t even have a name yet. Which meant she wasn’t on their website either.

I was starting to panic. Where was this adorable dog I met?

I frantically emailed my volunteer contact and tried to describe her as best I could. She then put me in contact with another volunteer who might know more about the dog I was searching for.

And then finally she showed up on the website, under the name Cadbury. I knew what I had to do. The next weekend I would go back to the same event and apply to adopt this doggy soulmate of mine.

BUT, there was a catch. When we arrived, someone else had already submitted an application. As I walked her around the Petco and held her for her Bordatella vaccine, I was starting to get heartbroken. What if I couldn’t adopt her?

My boyfriend and I stayed for hours to be interviewed by the volunteers, hoping to secure this pup as our own. Then we went home and waited.

And waited, until finally I got the email with approval for adoption! I had to schedule a home visit, but then I was free to pick her up and take her home forever.

On the day that I took her home, we arrived at the event to hear this obnoxious dog barking from a crate inside the rescue’s van. Turns out that was the one we picked. I was a bit worried about what I got myself into, but as you know the rest is history. Already 3.5 years have gone by and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

We might be celebrating Luna’s birthday, but I can’t leave out Ralph! If you missed his rescue story, be sure to check it out here.

You might still be wondering what are Luna’s 5 favorite chews? She picked the Barkworthies Beef Trachea, Braided BullyStick, Big Cheese Chew, Cow Ear, and Antler! You can find these awesome chews and many more on Barkworthies.com.
