There are many pre-assembled first aid kits for dogs on the market today. These kits are super convenient, but they usually come at a higher price tag. The kits are usually geared for a one time use only and might not even include all the necessities. Making your own first aid kit can save a few bucks and also ensure it is customized to your dog’s needs.

In preparation for our BlogPaws trip this weekend, I assembled a first aid kit to bring along with us. We will be stopping along the way to do a bit of hiking, so I wanted to be sure we were prepared with a first aid kit in case of an accident or emergency.

I made up a list of what I wanted in Luna’s first aid kit, which you can see below. Then I went to Walmart and was able to pick up almost all of it. The beauty of building your own First Aid Kit for Dogs is that many of the items don’t have to be specifically made for dogs. This means you don’t have to buy the fancy dog tweezers, so you can save some $$ and even use it yourself if you get injured!

However, there are a few differences. For example, you want to avoid highly adhesive bandages or tapes, since our furry friends are just that – furry. Also, you’ll see Hydrogen Peroxide and Rubbing Alcohol listed, but they aren’t for the exact same purposes we might use. Hydrogen Peroxide can be used to induce vomiting and Rubbing Alcohol should only be used to clean instruments like the tweezers or thermometer. For anything that needs to be ingested, consult your veterinarian for dosage amounts.

I spent under $50 to build our kit, which sounds like a lot, but there is a big upfront cost. You won’t have to buy scissors or tweezers again and many of the other items will last for more than one use. Restocking your personalized first aid kit will definitely be cheaper than buying a second pre-made one. Plus, when I priced ready to use first aid kits for dogs with similar contents, we were getting closer to $100!
