Luna shows off her certificate after beagle training graduation.

Luna did it! She is now a graduate of basic obedience training!

As I mentioned in my first training post, Beagles are known for their stubbornness. With the upcoming move and BlogPaws a few weeks ago, I also probably did not spend as much time working with Luna as I should have. We also will not be able to participate in the next semester of classes because of the move. With these factors, Luna might take another beginners class in the fall.

We may look into a Beginners Agility Class for Fun! Luna is great at her sits, downs, and stays, but she just has so much energy. An agility class could be a wonderful way to enhance our training while burning some of that energy.

We will be working at all the exercises that we have learned over the summer so that way we are even better. She uses her sits, downs, and stays pretty regularly, so we will have to keep working on heel, recall, and leave it. Luna gets distracted really easily too, so watch me is also important.

I have had a wonderful time working with Luna at training. It can be stressful and frustrating sometimes when all she wants is to eat the treat in your hand, but when she follows commands I am a proud dog mamma. I was told that training would be a great way to bond with your pup and now I know it really is. If you get a new dog, whether it is your first or 100th, I recommend training him or her in some way. Formal obedience training may not be for every person or dog, but you can work with your dog in your own home.

I hope you enjoyed reading about our journey through an eight week basic obedience training course (even if we skipped writing about day 7. Sorry!) If you have not already, read about WHY I decided to start taking Luna to training and ways to be prepared for disasters in Beagle Training Day 6. If you missed any other week’s post you can find them here.
