I lost my last grandparent last December. Lt. Col. Charles Shipman started his military career through the ROTC program at Cornell University, the Alma mater of us both. He then went on to serve in Vietnam, South America (Columbia and Panama), and even flew President Nixon and Johnson in the Army One helicopter.

As a military man, my grandpa was strict, stubborn, and often very serious. I remember getting into a lot of trouble when my sister and I would stay with them when we were kids for being too rambunctious or argumentative. He did start to soften as time went on and more grandkids were born, but one of my favorite memories of him was a recent one.

Over Christmas 2012, I was able to introduce him to my (at the time) newly adopted dog. You may know her as Luna. She was probably more rambunctious than I ever was as a kid, stealing all the other dogs’ toys and treats, but you could tell they took a liking to each other.

I wish I had a picture of them together. Since I wasn’t able to find one, I wanted to share a few photos I was able to find of him with other dogs.

And yes (because I know you were wondering), that nerdy red headed kid is my dad.

My grandpa wasn’t the only veteran in my family. My uncle also served during Vietnam. Even though Veteran’s Day has already passed for this year, I want to thank all veterans (and those currently serving) for their service.

Do you have a special veteran in your family?

This week’s 52 Snapshots of Life Photo Challenge theme is VETERAN and this post is my submission. If you’d like to see more photos from our 52 Snapshots of Life Photo Challenge, you can view them all over in my Flickr 52 Snapshots of Life photo album.

Don’t forget to visit last week’s post to see how Luna celebrates the FALL and come back next week to find out about my PASSION.
