Winter is surely here in many parts of the US. We’re on our way back to Colorado from Virginia and it is sure chilly outside! I think the forecast is even calling for snow soon. Though I’m not the biggest fan of cold weather, I do love seasons and snow!

Even though cold weather is… well… cold, it allows me to do some seasonal activities both by myself and with my dogs that I otherwise wouldn’t normally get the chance to do. One of my favorite things about cold weather is that I can find more excuses to enjoy warm seasonal beverage (yes, Starbucks I’m talking about you!).

7 Cold Weather Activities for Dogs & Dog Moms

Snuggle Up and Watch a Movie

This is something you can do all year round, but it feels even more special when it’s chilly outside. If it happens to be snowing and/or you are all wearing matching pajamas, that’s even better! At our house, we have some fun seasonal blankets that everyone loves (maybe Luna a bit too much). Watching holiday classics mixed with some mindless Christmas “love story” type movies is my favorite. The dogs don’t normally notice the movie much (unless there is a barking dog), but I think they enjoy the time we spend together. These are some of my absolute favorite moments.

Start a Puzzle

Doing a puzzle is another great winter activity. You really just need a cleared off table top and a few moments of time. It’s something you can do for hours at a time or a few minutes here and there. Really you can just go at your own pace! While your dogs may not be much help with a table top (or 3D – if you’re fancy) puzzle, they can enjoy their own puzzle. Whether it’s a stuffed Kong or another interactive dog puzzle, they can work their way through varying levels of difficulty to reach a tasty treat. If you’re pup is even a fraction as obsessed with food as Luna is, they will surely love it!

Enjoy a Warm Seasonal Treat

For me, it’s not winter without having the chance to enjoy some delicious seasonal beverages. They just warm me up inside and out and put a big smile on my face. First, the Pumpkin Spice Lattes come and then onto the Peppermint Mochas! Around Christmas, Eggnog is another big hit. For one of the first times, dogs (and cats) can enjoy some of these festive drinks too.

The Honest Kitchen launched two seasonal warm beverage treats that BOTH cats and dogs can enjoy. The Pumpkin Spice Latte and Eggnog are dehydrated powders that you simply need to mix with hot water and let cool for your pet to enjoy. They are both made with simple ingredients and are perfect for sweater weather! The PSL features dehydrated goat’s milk, dehydrated pumpkin, dehydrated honey, cinnamon, and ginger. Eggnog is made of dehydrated goat’s milk, dehydrated egg, dehydrated honey, and cinnamon.

If you want your dog or cat to enjoy a warm holiday beverage treat, be sure to pick up a canister soon because they will only be available for a limited time! With these seasonal additions, we can’t wait to see what The Honest Kitchen comes up with next.

Bundle Up to Play in the Snow

Though this is probably Luna’s least favorite activity, it’s one of my favorite. I just love flopping down in bunch of white powder or seeing my dogs try to bound from place to place. She is a bit of a princess who has to stay as warm as physically possible, so she doesn’t mix well with snow and cold. That’s why I bundle her up with a water resistant and well insulated jacket plus Pawz Boots to keep her pad pads protected and her feet from getting cold and wet. We also limit how long we are outside to make sure everyone is happy and comfortable. All the bundling and prep may sound like a lot of work, but I think it’s all worth it. You’ll get some excellent photos and memories you won’t be able to forget!

Hop in the Car to See Christmas Light Displays

I’m obsessed with seeing Christmas light displays this time of year. Right now as we drive 25 hours from Virginia to Colorado, I’m entertaining myself at night be just simply looking out the window. It’s so fun to see what people come up with for their different light shows. The best part is that dogs can enjoy it too! They may not understand or even pay attention to the lights, but they’ll appreciate every moment they spend with you. So go load up the car, bring along some hot chocolate for the humans and a PSL or Eggnog for the pups, and hit the roads to find amazing Christmas lights!
