The other day I was laying on my couch and I randomly announced to my boyfriend that “The couch smells like butt.” Instead of him being shocked or surprised by my sudden declaration, he agreed and said it was a major problem.

I knew dogs could be smelly, but even after almost three years of living with Luna, I still can’t quite comprehend just how smelly one dog could be.

Luna with our new Febreze Air Purifier

Luna is allowed pretty much everywhere in our home including on the furniture, so that means dog hair and dog smell are also everywhere. I don’t like to really highlight this to my house guests, but one of Luna’s favorite places to sit is on top of the couch pillows. That’s right. There is more than just a bit of dog butt on those pillows.

Typically I tackled these less pleasant smells with a bit of Febreze™ Fabric Refresher, which got the job done for sure. But, I never really thought about how much dirt and pet dander was left lingering in the air.

I did, however, realize that there were other bad smells floating around in the air.

Dog smells are definitely not pleasant, but the absolute worst part about living in an apartment is dealing with the smells and noise coming from all the upstairs, downstairs, and next door neighbors. You have no control over it, so you just have to deal with the consequences.

The two biggest culprits in my apartment building are cigarette smoke and food smells. Our apartment is a garden style walk up, which means all the apartment doors are technically outside. This definitely helps diffuse the food smells from other apartments, but some still manage to leak in.

Residents are also allowed to smoke on their balcony and our downstairs neighbors do it all the time. Since smoke rises, it always finds its way up through the air vents and gets into our apartment. I really hate the smell of smoke, but I’m also worried about the health issues associated with all the second hand smoke.

In the past, I have tried to hide the smells by lighting candles, but I know that isn’t the best solution. The candles can add more toxic materials to the air and they aren’t safe to leave unattended, especially if you have pets. And, candles just mask smells, so as soon as you blow them out you go right back to the stink you were trying to avoid.

There are always surprises living in an apartment too. The worst experience I’ve had so far was when our maintenance department decided to paint another apartment in the dead of winter. Cold weather means paint will take FOREVER to dry. I came home to my apartment full of paint fumes. I was so stressed out and worried about Luna and my health!
