Let’s get serious. I’m going to be channeling my inner Luna here for a second. One of the best part of the holidays is the food. Friends and family are great (and amazing and I love them so), but food is FOOD. Don’t even try to go on a diet this time of year. Just don’t put yourself through that.

Now that we’re talking food. Let’s talk about a fancy new pet technology product that hit the market this year! PetSafe launched their new automatic pet feeder, the Smart Feed, earlier this year and I got a sneak peek back in March while at the Global Pet Expo. I’m always thrilled to see and try out new pet tech, so I was thrilled to give this smart feeder a whirl.

And since PetSafe has generously agreed to sponsor Day 7 of our 2017 Stocking Stuffer Giveaways, you have a chance at trying out this new smart pet feeder too! Read on to find out how an automatic pet feeder might benefit you and your pets and then keep going, so you can enter to win one.

Benefits of Automatic Pet Feeders

Weight Management

An automatic pet feeder like the Smart Feed from PetSafe, allows pet parents of dogs and cats to program just how much food and when their pets will fed. Because you can set the amount and frequency in advance, it is a lot easier to stick to a specified diet for your pets. No more feeling guilty when they bat their puppy dog (or kitty cat) eyes! This may be a great option for pet parents who give a few too many extra treats each day or have a pet who needs a bit of weight management.

Regular Routine

Did you read our post on holiday anxiety in pets? One common one is a change in their routine. With an automatic feeder, your pet can be fed at the same time each day so at least there is one thing that stays consistent through the hustle and bustle of the holidays (and throughout the year).

No Guilt When Plans Change

I have always been a strong advocate that working men and women CAN have pets. Though I currently work full time from home, I did work full time at an office for the first few years I had Luna. I always made Luna my priority – always coming home before I went to the gym or a social event – but there were a few occasions when I got home later than I had planned. Whether it was traffic, weather, or a work emergency, I felt so guilty not being home on time. An automatic pet feeder would help relieve some of that guilt as I would have known that Luna would be fed on time. Of course I still had to walk Luna, so it doesn’t remove ALL the guilt, but some. Cats on the other hand can use their litter box inside, so it is an even better fit.

More Frequent, Smaller Meals

With a programmable automatic pet feeder, you can schedule multiple meals with smaller portion sizes if that fits your pet’s schedule. This may be a good option for dogs or cats who get bored throughout the day or even experience a bit of separation anxiety. When we tackled Luna’s separation anxiety, one of the things that worked for us was splitting up her meal in smaller vessels throughout our apartment and feeding her when we left. The Smart Feed would certainly allow pet parents to do that!

Fresh Food for Each Meal

Did you know that pet food can go stale? And some pets even notice? If you have a picky pet (especially a cat), then an automatic feeder may be the right fit for them. This allows you to release single portion (or even smaller) amounts of food at a time rather than leaving an open bowl out while you are away.

No Early Morning Wake Up Calls

If you have a pet who likes to be fed on schedule at the crack of dawn every day, then you may want to consider an automatic feeder. Even if you’re up at 5 or 6 AM to feed them during the week, I bet you want to sleep in on the weekends a bit. The feeder allows your pet to get fed on time while you get a few extra ZZZ’s.

Saves Time

No more measuring out your pet’s food for every single meal. The feeder does it for you! Though it only saves a few minutes at a time that can add up and allow you to spend more time enjoying your pets company each week. If you have a long to do list from kids or other pets every morning, this also helps cross one item off the list without really lifting a finger.

About PetSafe

PetSafe has been a leader in pet tech for quite some time. Currently they offer a Self-Cleaning Litter Box, Automatic Ball Launcher, Treat ‘n Praise, and more. This year they added to their pet tech offerings with the Smart Feed Automatic Pet Feeder.

The Smart Feed connects to the WiFi in your house, so you can control and adjust it via an app on your smart phone (either Android or iPhone). Through the Smart Feed app, you can schedule up to 12 meals a day ranging in size from 1/8 cup to 4 cups. When it’s time to dispense a meal, it will flow into a stainless steel bowl with a 5 cup capacity that is idea for cats and small to medium sized dogs. The food hopper itself holds up to 24 cups of dry or semi-moist food.

In addition to scheduling regularly feedings, it also has a “Feed Now” option if you need to feed a pet right then and there. And if you have a super food hound like mine, you can try their “Slow Feed” option, which delivers the food over a 15 minute period. The Smart Feed app will also send alerts, so you can monitor your pet’s feeding even when you’re not at home. It also sends alerts if your are running low on food or if the feeder has gone offline.

This would have been perfect for my Kyoko, who would eat an entire bag of dog food if you let her. Unfortunately, she passed the day after Thanksgiving, but I have adopted another sweet girl Coonhound, Megumi, and I worry about her eating too much – too fast – at one time. This would be great for her. She’s 10 months old, so she also needs to be on a different food than my two boy Coonhounds, and this would be a good way to separate her food from theirs.
